On Thursday, March 7th, 2019, FlexCare once again donated four specially-designed mobile gaming stations, known as “GO Karts,” to another exceptional children’s hospital on behalf of our healthcare travelers. With a new East Coast office in Charlotte, North Carolina, we continued our commitment to serving our local communities by selecting Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte as the recipient of this year’s gift.

As a company dedicated to healthcare staffing, we’ve made a commitment to give back on behalf of our nurses and clinicians, starting with hospitals in the communities where we live and work. Levine Children’s Hospital is doing amazing work for pediatric patients, particularly those with complex conditions. Through our gift of the GO Karts, we’re thrilled to be able to provide these kids with some sense of normalcy while they’re undergoing treatment at Levine. - Travis Mannon, chief executive officer of FlexCare.

FlexCare staff were joined by representatives from Levine Children's, RightSourcing, and Gamers Outreach.

The therapeutic stations, developed by Gamers Outreach, and Zach Wigal, a recent CNN Heroes nominee, will be used by all pediatric patients and their families as a means of entertainment and connection during their stay at the hospital. It’s a way for them to take their minds off their health challenges and just be kids again. These state-of-the-art GO Karts feature:

  • Hospital-grade equipment, including an internal lift that lowers and raises to accommodate all chair and bed heights
  • Self-contained and fully mobile for use in any area of the hospital
  • 24” HD monitor with sound
  • Xbox One game console with two controllers pre-loaded with 13 of the most popular games

“It’s such a special treat when our patients are on the receiving end of the generosity of the community,” said Carrie Keuten, events coordinator, Levine Children’s. “I am certain the GO Karts will be a big hit and will bring many smiles and laughter into our hospital – something that is priceless for the caregivers and family members of our patients to observe.”

Since 2006, FlexCare has placed thousands of travel nurses and clinicians at facilities around the country and the team is passionate about the mission to enhance patient care in any way that it can. In 2018, FlexCare donated mobile gaming stations to Shriners Hospitals for Children - Northern California. We received this recent update from Shriners about a young ICU patient:

I can tell you we had a patient in ICU recovering from a significant burn who was working on standing again for the first time. It was very painful and exhausting and he was having trouble completing the time his occupational therapist was allotting for him to spend standing. Around the same time we found out he was a Minecraft fan and myself and the rec therapist brought up one of the GOKarts. He stood while he played Minecraft and was able to stand for triple the amount of time he had previously! I am sure this is just one of many patients your GO Karts have had a significant impact on!

The entire FlexCare family, including internal staff and clinicians, would like to sincerely thank Levine Children’s Hospital and Gamers Outreach for their partnership in helping transform the medical journeys for thousands of children.
