Workplace Bullying in Healthcare
Contact a recruiterA Travel Clinician’s Guide to Navigating Workplace Bullying
Unfortunately, bullying isn’t rare in healthcare. And for travel clinicians, it can show up fast. You’re the outsider, the temp, the one who doesn’t know how things “are done.” That can make you a target.
This guide won’t fix toxic coworkers. But it will show you how to respond, protect your peace, and avoid mistakes that put your contract at risk.
When You Feel Targeted
You don’t need to name it “bullying” for it to take a toll. If a teammate is talking down to you, cutting you out of communication, or making work harder than it needs to be, here’s what works:
Step 1: Stay Calm
Plant both feet. Take a slow breath. The more even your tone, the more control you keep.
Step 2: Defuse, Don’t Confront
Try: “You seem upset with me. I want to make sure I’m supporting the team—can you help me understand what I’ve done to offend you?”
This puts the behavior back on them without starting a fight. Most bullies back off when they aren’t getting the reaction they want.

Workplace Bullying Tips That Actually Work
- Stay neutral when team gossip starts. Silence is safer than agreeing or objecting.
- Default to curiosity. Ask questions instead of correcting. It lowers tension.
- Control the controllable. Chart cleanly. Show up early. Don’t give them fuel.
- Don’t expect to be liked. Focus on being respected—and finishing strong.
